Narrator Katherine Press takes listeners into her confidence as she delivers a mystery that borders on horror. Young Rita Murphy is delighted to become a nanny for the wealthy Harrington family, who live in London. But things change drastically when Mrs. Harrington, 12-year-old Hera, and 5-year-old Teddie are "banished" to forbidding Foxcote Manor. Press smoothly portrays characters of all ages, classes, and personalities after Hera discovers an abandoned baby in the woods. Everyone wants to keep her, but things go awry when a family friend who is Mrs. Harrington's lover unexpectedly arrives. Most impressive is Press's portrayal of Rita, who remains compassionate and stable as violence--both real and imagined--occurs. The novel's mood of impending doom makes for chilling listening.
