This is ostensibly the story of Mitchell, a white New York City ad executive whose life is falling apart. But really, it's satire that has white fragility and superfecundation--the fertilization of two ova--at its base. Narrator Jay Smooth offers just the right mix of deadpan delivery and incredulity, straightforwardness and sly awareness. This is satire as high art, and Smooth easily moves from Mitchell's shiftless life to a lively cast of characters: the boss who invites Mitchell's family over for dinner right after having killed his own family, a soap opera star Mitchell has an affair with, and a Jamaican obstetrician, to name but a few. This is a savage accounting of white fright and slavery's long-lasting impact on all Americans. J.P.S. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2020]
