Narrator Emma Cary's gentle voice captures the fragility in the complex relationship between a mother and daughter. Michiko's possessions, which were part of her life in 1940s Japan, are inherited by her daughter, Erika, who lives in contemporary England. These things are the vehicle through which the two women's rich histories, including their secrets, unfold. Cary's spot-on Japanese accent sets the tone for the story, although frequent long draws of breath are distracting. Her soft voice effectively reflects the reserve of many of the female Japanese characters, and are slightly bolder at times when she portrays Erika's modern-day friends. Cary's sweet, high-pitched voice lends a light, almost daydreamy, feel to this emotional novel. Overall, she gives an interesting storytelling quality to the listening experience.
