In this audiobook, Henrietta von Harmon, having just gotten engaged to Inspector Clive Howard, is shocked to discover that he comes from one of the richest, most connected families in 1936 Chicago. Narrator Jane Entwistle effectively portrays the internal conflict felt by Henrietta, who is from the slums, as she is overwhelmed by the Howards' opulence and standards of etiquette. With Entwistle's empathetic guidance, listeners identify with the resentment Henrietta feels over having to change her life to meet other people's expectations. The audiobook ends on a cliff-hanger, which comes across jarringly. Nonetheless, Entwistle's gentle voice is well suited to this romantic audiobook with a hint of mystery.
