Listeners accompany Megan Melvick as she returns to her family's estate in Scotland to be with her dying sister. Despite their privileged position, her family is wracked with tragedy, not the least of which is Megan's unexplained deafness, which she struggles to understand. The story is told from the viewpoints of Megan and her rebellious friend, Carla. Narrator Helen McAlpine brings both young women to life with panache. Carla's broad accent and rough edges contrast with the more refined portrayal of Megan. McAlpine's voicings of the rest of the diverse characters are strong, and her pace helps build the tension as the plot reveals deceit and deception. The result is an engaging contemporary mystery.
