At a compact 28 minutes, a listener might not think this collection of literary tidbits could pack a serious punch. However, these 55-word stories (no more, no less) provide a truly unique audio experience. Narrators Liza Seneca and Christian Baskous voice an array of strange characters in circumstances that range from the banal to the bizarre. They're often centered on finding, keeping, or abandoning romance. Seneca's voice is warm and inviting, even when she's outlining a crafty murder plot. Baskous has a raspy, gravelly tone that, conversely, makes even the most innocuous concept sound suspicious. Their lively narration compensates for missing the illustrations of the print version. This audio production can be enjoyed from beginning to end or by skipping around as the mood strikes. N.M. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2020]
