While this audiobook includes crime, it's not a crime story per se. However, David Joy's latest title is a must-listen. Narrator MacLeod Andrews has just the right voice for a story that has few heroes but many realistic characters. Centered on a troubled relationship between a father and a son who is addicted to drugs, the novel touches on the nation's opioid crisis, the heartbreak of caring for an addict, and the sometimes blurred lines between good and evil when it comes to fighting crime. MacLeod's narration, with his smoky drawl, evokes vivid images of the many diverse characters. Those who like listening to complex fiction are in for a treat.
