Reid Forgrave's audiobook meshes sadness and science while looking at values, relationships, and our love affair with football. Zac Easter was a promising high school football player in Iowa who loved the sport. But repeated blows to his head sent him spiraling into a struggle with mental illness. Jason Culp's exceptional narration gives Zac an identity forged in the dignity the author tries to impart. Much of the story is based on Zac's diary, which provides honest insights on what is going on in his mind. He is often self-aware yet unsure of himself. Culp changes his voice appropriately when quoting people. Zac's girlfriend, Alison, is given a strong, supportive voice that fits her personality. Overall, Culp humanizes the medical aspects of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) while giving Zac and his loved ones the respect they deserve.
