Time-Life enters the audiobook realm with this work, which is adapted from its popular print series. Two narrators give the listener context while a number of readers portray certain incidents and/or read monologues. Music and sound effects add to these portrayals, making them quite interesting and entertaining. For example, a narrator describes the construction of the Great Pyramid while music and the sounds of construction are heard in the background. In another instance, an Egyptian king boasts of the greatness of his kingdom and the splendor of Memphis while music and the sounds of a busy city are in the background. The recording has a number of episodes that employ these techniques, which enrich the narrative and provide a pleasing contrast to a simple narrative reading. The reading is easy to understand and have credible dramatic interpretations. Those who haven't been introduced to audiobooks will find this a delightful place to start.
