Narrator Vaneh Assadourian gives an approachable portrayal of a girl who is looking for her mother the night before the D-Day landings of WWII. Samira and her mother work with the Resistance in Nazi-occupied France, and Samira knows that her captured mother will be executed if she can't find her before the invasion starts. Assadourian switches between French and German accents flawlessly, adopting a youthful tone when portraying Samira as she searches through the night. In the absence of added sound effects, Assadourian simulates the rat-tat-tat of flying bullets and the yips of Samira's canine companion, immersing listeners in this historical story about a girl's courage in the face of immense danger.
