Narrator Adam Best's gentle Irish accent invites listeners into a relentlessly dark story of Northern Ireland during the Troubles. The main point of view is that of Catholic detective Desmond Maguire, who serves uncomfortably on a Protestant police force. Best voices Maguire's thoughts on being the sole survivor of an IRA ambush. In his search for the informer who drew him into the disastrous raid, Maguire travels to the strange, mysterious purgatorial island of Lough Derg. This unsettling mystery has listeners continually uncertain about what is real, whom to trust, and what to believe. Best effectively differentiates the characters, including the female voices.
