Narrator Andrea Emmes assumes a proper tone as a foil to Jen Turano's comedy of manners. Using a brisk on-point style, Emmes introduces street-urchin-turned-detective Gabriella Goodhue as she attempts to right the wrongs society inflicts on young women. Gabriella's sleuthing is interrupted by Nicholas Quinn, a childhood friend who has become a member of New York's high society. Gabriella has a sweet yet self-righteous tone, while Nicholas's voice is midrange and slightly husky. Emmes's precise enunciation stretches surprisingly well to encompass Turano's varied cast of characters. From Gabriella's friend, Daphne, whose voice is baby-doll precious, to Nicholas's driver, Gus, who sports a New York accent, Emmes selects distinct vocal details for characters. Listeners will appreciate the humor and mystery that Emmes stirs together. C.A. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2021]
