Narrator Jeanette Illidge is the voice of Jessi Rumfield, who is trying to come to terms with her responsibility for a tragedy a year earlier so that she can move forward. Illidge gives the story a strong first-person voice as Jessi moves from Now to Then and back again. Slipping into dialogue, Illidge uses subtle changes in timbre and tone to bring personalities to life. Friend Willow has the clichéd voice of a Valley Girl blogger. Mel, Jessi's mother figure throughout most of her life, exudes love even through her own pain. Male friends Rowan and Luke display a range of emotions both destructive and supportive.
