Narrator Ulka Simone Mohanty expertly portrays a diverse group of characters in a novel that challenges both Indian customs and feminist ideals. Serena loves her job and the life she's built on her own. After falling out with her newlywed younger sister, Serena rebuilds old friendships and makes new ones. In the process, she reconnects with her ex-boyfriend, Jesse, and befriends a co-worker, both of whom assist with Serena's introspective examination of her life. Mohanty's range is best displayed during a spontaneous performance in which Serena reads her iPhone notes in a cadence that turns brainstorming into slam poetry. Mohanty's narration captures another comedic moment when Jesse and Serena mock each other with exaggerated impersonations of each other. A.L.C. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2021]
