Dallas Escue's upbeat performance nicely matches author Elliott Light's conversational style in this first volume of his planned Shep Harrington mystery series. Harrington is a disbarred lawyer who returns to his North Carolina hometown after being imprisoned and then exonerated for a crime he didn't commit. When a friend commits suicide, Shep suspects murder. The town is full of personalities, from country boys and ornery women to gracious ladies and anxious teens. Small-town misunderstandings and secrets abound in a story that includes thought-provoking social issues. Escue gives the likable hero an easy tenor and an appealing manner. He also has fun coloring-in other characters with attentive pacing, and shifts in tone and pitch, which makes for an altogether engaging listen.
