Amelie Edwards flawlessly narrates this novel based on historical facts relating to WWII. It humorously yet credibly portrays the French village of Brassac and its residents, including fearless gun-toting nuns who were part of the French Resistance. Listeners find themselves in the middle of the action during the Occupation as the townsfolk, especially the nuns, secretly fight back while seeming to surrender. Edwards distinguishes each nun, particularly tough and inspiring Mother Superior Marie. Brave, serious Father Jubé is a touching contrast, and a flashback to an earlier romance is heartbreaking. Edwards excels with lots of humor, vivid and lyrical narrative, impressive French and German accents, and personalities and relationships that combine to add atmosphere and dimension. Music written by the author makes the audio version of this novel essential. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2021]
