Narrators Erica Sullivan and Kevin Kenerly capture 1890s San Francisco and Hawaii. Listeners meet detectives Sabina Carpenter and John Quincannon, who are sailing to the Aloha State. Quincannon is trailing two crooks who robbed money and bonds from a San Franciscan. Kenerly vividly conveys seasickness, impatience, and bravado. Sullivan's patient yet feisty Carpenter is drawn into a clever locked-room mystery when Philip Oakes begs her to find his uncle's killer. Sullivan and Kenerly effectively depict the Hawaiian locale, food, words, and extremes of weather. Most entertaining is Kenerly's portrayal of a local private investigator whose shrewd skills and ability to drink massive amounts of beer impress even Quincannon and add to a fun listen.
