ENCHANTED NIGHT

In this short and stylized work, Steven Millhauser takes the ordinary event of a full moon and turns it on its head. Rather than regarding the moon with the usual fondness, an entire Connecticut town is drawn outdoors, wooed by a new kind of luminous magic. Most of the time Linda Stephens's narration suits the stylistic choices Millhauser made in his text: staccato sentences, odd observationsS There are points, however, where her performance seems too aware of itself, and listeners run the risk of being swept up by linguistic eloquence and not the story itself.
