Gorky's memoir of his childhood is unsparing in its stark and unromantic depiction of the heights of human kindness and the depths of human cruelty. Nicholas Boulton's expressive performance of this classic of Russian literature and history is a perfect match of voice and text. Gorky, born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov in 1868, was orphaned at an early age and lived with his grandparents thereafter. His memoirs of this time form the basis for this work. Boulton has an amazingly versatile and expressive British accent. He skillfully gives the many characters in this production distinct and credible voices. His enunciation is perfect. He is just as adroit with the narrative. An excellent production. M.T.F. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2021]
