This audiobook succeeds because of narrator Sean Crisden's exceptional performance. Set in New York in 1945, this work of historical fiction includes everyone from Nazis to gangsters to intriguing entertainers. Crisden creates unique personas for each character, particularly Black private detective Walter Morris, who has suffered because of his race and because of the assignment he accepts that brings him into conflict with Germans who are trying to avoid capture at the end of WWII. Author Dion Baia's dialogue and ability to tell a story are terrific, yet the underlying plot will leave many heads shaking because of the leaps of faith it requires to find it believable. Through it all, Crisden delivers a superb performance that transforms a good book into a great listen. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2022]
