Anne-Marie Piazza takes on the narration of this historical mystery set in 1882 London and featuring a host of aristocratic and domestic characters. Lady Covington, twice married and widowed, believes she's being poisoned and pleads with sleuthing cook Kat Holloway to investigate. Steely-voiced, stiff-upper-lipped Baroness Covington's tones contrast distinctly with the speech of broadly accented cooks, gardeners, and police. At the same time, husky-toned and sometimes barely audible Daniel McAdams, masterful undercover investigator for Scotland Yard, who is Holloway's special friend, hunts the secret sponsor of Irish terrorists. Piazza smoothly shifts to class-appropriate accents for McAdams and Holloway when they pose as aristocrats in the course of their investigations. Piazza's able performance captures the emotional dynamics of this intense mystery. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2021]
