A century after the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921, the horror of the event hasn't lessened. Historian Scott Ellsworth wrote this brief but detailed account in 1982, with emphasis on the historical context of the riot and how the media and other factions ignited the tinderbox. Ellsworth reports with empathy but without moralizing, and in this new production narrator Pat Grimes adopts the author's evenhanded tone. His timbre is warm, his tone confident, and his pace is brisk but unhurried. Many of the events of the Tulsa massacre remain unknown or highly controversial today. This accessible work makes a good introduction to the subject. D.B. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2021]
