When a group of metal detectorists discover a body and possible artifacts on the coast of Norfolk, England, DCI Nelson enlists forensic archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway. Series narrator Jane McDowell's familiar voice transports listeners into the thirteenth installment, establishing the veteran characters and supporting cast with deft portrayals. Newly single, Ruth resumes her academic career in Norfolk, while Nelson faces pressure to retire. Throughout the investigation, McDowell reflects their struggle to suppress their mutual attraction with alternating tones of professional remove and guilt-ridden longing. Despite McDowell's solid performance, persistent sibilant sounds and the occasional abrupt scene transition somewhat detract from the overall listening experience. Nonetheless, as the well-paced tension mounts, all parties are inexorably drawn toward a climax that keeps listeners in keen anticipation.
