Narrator Commarrah Yochanan becomes the voice of Charlie, a 27-year-old trans writer who returns home to Sunset Springs after being laid off from his job in New York City. Yochanan injects the right amount of feeling to portray his moods—annoyance, sarcasm, and moments of vulnerability. In his hometown Charlie is the focus of a lot of judgment, but his guard comes down when he meets Jackson. Yochanan’s narration is steady; they add a bit of flirtatiousness with each encounter between Charlie and Jackson. Their first-person narration believably reflects a character who moves from the fast pace of New York City to the much slower pace of a conservative small town.
