Narrator John Voce performs this police procedural set in the town of Ryebridge in Northern England. DI Harry Lennox and DS Jess Wilde, both portrayed with Scottish accents, investigate two interconnected crimes. First, 3-year-old Lucy Green suddenly reappears after having been missing for five weeks; next, the severed hand of a local drug kingpin and human trafficker turns up; then, a second person's hand. Voce alternates between a precise, uninflected account of the investigation and increasingly intense discoveries and interactions with criminals, drug addicts, and residents sporting a variety of northern British and Scottish accents. These crimes, described all too vividly and unemotionally by Voce, are connected to Lennox's past, something Wilde slowly uncovers, which puts them both in danger. M.B.K.
