When the death of a leading Chicagoan is ruled a suicide, his children approach ex-cop-turned-P.I. Ashe Cayne to help investigate his death. Narrator Amir Abdullah brings life to a slightly world-weary Ashe as he reluctantly agrees to take on the case and finds himself drawn into a web of corruption and intrigue in which nothing is quite as it seems. Abdullah's narration is perfectly matched to this gritty mystery. His characterizations are particularly strong as he uses authentic-sounding accents to differentiate the wide cast of characters ranging from Russian gangsters to social elites. He creates a likable, dogged detective in Ashe, and his spot-on timing keeps the plot moving. K.J.P. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2021]
