This audiobook is a companion to an exhibit on Reconstruction at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. A variety of authors take a historical perspective on the period. The most poignant work is Kimberlé Crenshaw's essay, which looks at the era through the lens of the 2015 attack on the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Karen Chilton's narration captures the full flavor of the entries--she is engaging but detached in the purely historical passages and emotionally engaged and even outraged in others. Her pace and effective use of pauses make the material easy to follow. Sadly, the people who would benefit the most from this work are the ones least likely to listen to it. R.C.G.
