AMONG THIEVES

In this debut fantasy, narrator Zoe Mills masters multiple points of view. A motley crew of five rogues is gathered to perform a daring heist. Each chapter is devoted to one of the five, and Mills shows each personality through the tone of the character's interactions among the crew, as well as the unfolding of their secrets. Mills maintains a good pace throughout and never lets the story lag. She effectively creates the dark atmosphere of suppression and the society of gangs and violence. The atmosphere is tempered by the sarcasm of some of the characters. Mills also creates plenty of suspense for the misdirection and surprising turns of the plot.
