Narrator Cole Tamminen captures Dr. Chuck Radis's initial inexperience in a scene featuring his nervous exchange with a difficult patient. The young Radis had come to Peaks Island, just off the coast of Portland, Maine, to practice in a "health manpower shortage area." Tamminen may make listeners forget he's not Radis as he delivers the doctor's memoir. He gives Radis a confident voice that masks his early hesitation with patients. Tamminen can also be amusing--as when he relates Radis's yarn about leaving his wallet on top of his car and mimics the doctor's rapid shifts between hope and despair until it's found. Some of Radis's stories are serious. An account of a suicide, for example, leads to memories of patients lost, delivered with reflection by Tamminen.
