Forrest Gander creates spaciousness in his narration of his latest collection of poems. His long pauses, clear enunciation, and emphasis on particular words create a rhythm that feels almost classical. It's fitting for these beautiful poems, which explore the connections between the human and nonhuman worlds. He writes about the landscapes of India and California, love and desire, and embodiment in many forms, drawing on his extensive knowledge of lichens, as well as his appreciation for ancient Indian epics and Sangan writings. Gander's careful recitation is emotive but not overpowering. His smooth voice invites listeners to pay close attention to, and revel in, the music of his language.
