Carrington MacDuffie's performance is compelling in this novel focusing on the secrets we keep and the shadows that haunt us. A childhood lost to the Holocaust has tormented Paul for most of his adult life. Eventually, it leads to his divorce from Eve after years of serial philandering. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, however, Paul feels the need to return to Germany. He asks Eve to accompany him on this journey into the truth of his past, which she does, however reluctantly. MacDuffie is perfect for this thoughtful exploration of the lasting effects of trauma. She makes Paul's survivor's guilt understandable, and she's spot-on at delivering Eve's compassionate acceptance of Paul's angst. MacDuffie is exactly the right narrator for this touching, troubling tale. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2021]
