When the Howell family moves from California to Brooklyn, they find the perfect house for their all-American family: mom, Nora; dad, Keith; and their two teenage daughters. Narrator Hillary Huber tells the story from the perspectives of several of the characters. She delivers their settling-in anxiety, followed by a straightforward tone as day-to-day life proceeds. Then they discover that the house's previous residents were victims of a grisly triple homicide that remains unsolved. The tension mounts when daughter Stacey discovers a stranger watching the house and Keith wonders why the neighbors are so friendly, even intrusive. Huber keeps up the suspense throughout, but when the awful truth is revealed, the novel's ending disappoints. L.W.S. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2022]
