Narrator Caroline Hewitt gives American-born socialite Virginia d'Albert-Lake an American accent and a voice full of confidence and determination as she defies her family and French husband, refusing to return to America while the Nazis occupy France. Young Violette Szabo, daughter of a British father and French mother and widow of an officer in the French Foreign Legion, also aims to fight the Nazis. Hewitt imbues her with an insistent Cockney accent tempered by summers spent in France. The women are brought together when Virginia becomes a member of the French Resistance and Violette joins a British spy organization.
