Hannah Curtis is the perfect narrator for this strange, fascinating science-fiction novel. Her British accent lends texture to the lush adjectives that pepper the audiobook, which, while short, is full of insight and pathos. "The employees" are a combination of human and nonhuman passengers on a spaceship in the 22nd century. The whys of this situation are not given; rather, the focus is on the increasingly fraught interactions between the humans and their near-human counterparts. Curtis voices these individuals in short, numbered "statements," organized by unseen mediators. She does not change her voice or its modulation for each entity, showing how the lines between human beings and objects blur over time. An outstanding rendering of an original work. D.G.P.
