When the narrator of this book about the art of falconry expresses awe, surprise, excitement, or concern, listeners can be assured the emotions are real. The narrator is the author herself. Sy Montgomery does a solid job delivering this work, which combines her personal experience with biological information about birds and historical information about falconry. She makes clear that the birds, despite having been named, are fierce predators, not pets. Her pacing is good, making listening easy and understandable. As there are no extended quotes by other speakers, she wisely chooses not to give each an individual voice. Her vocal characterizations of hawk calls add a note of quirkiness to her narration without seeming affected. Montgomery also wrote and narrated THE SOUL OF AN OCTOPUS.
