Deepti Gupta is a soulful voice for this feminist memoir about migration, food, and staying true to one's choices. As narrator, she is a believable stand-in for the author, who reveals her struggles, and those of her extended family, as they undergo many major life transitions. Gupta dramatically expresses Ghosh's disorientation at her new life in America, annoyance with mispronunciations of Indian words and names, and other difficult moments in a slight accent that lends authenticity to the listening experience. She capably steers the listener through a complicated set of overlapping themes. Gupta evokes empathy for the author as we learn of her leaving an abusive marriage and navigating a career in the sciences as a woman of color.
