Narrator Leon Nixon's deep, mellow voice establishes the perfect tone for this noir crime story set in Los Angeles in 1963. Harry Ingram is an African-American news photographer, process server, and Korean war vet. Nixon's careful portrayal adds a tone of sadness that reflects Ingram's PTSD. When an army buddy is said to have died in a car accident, Ingram searches for the true cause of death. The plot comes to a head during a visit by Martin Luther King, Jr. As narrator, Nixon pumps up the action sequences, adds tension to the racist confrontations, and slows the tempo for the romantic interludes. But what is most engaging about this audiobook is the underlying history lesson about life in the days before Los Angeles codified equal rights.
