Before 1975, studio sports shows aired live did not exist. Narrator Barry Abrams does a splendid job of leading listeners through the history of the first such show, "NFL Today." Many people put their stamp on this program. It also had many firsts, most notably Irv Cross, the first African-American sportscaster, and Phyllis George, one of the first women sportscasters. Abrams tells their stories with the animation of a true sports fan and processional sports announcer. The author spoke to many of the people who are still alive to hear their recollections of how the show evolved, and Abrams eagerly uses this dialogue to add some different voices to the presentation. This is a thoroughly enjoyable piece of history for all football enthusiasts. E.E.S. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2022]
