Dangerous herbs, a father turned into a garden gnome, deadly prophecies--the daughter hardly knows what's fantasy and what's real. Huber's vulnerable confessional tone for the daughter contrasts nicely with the ringing cultured voice of her mother. Huber deftly handles the sardonic humor and emotional depth of Atwood's writing. The power of mothers and the power of story are at the heart of the tale.
