Melinna Bobadilla's engaging narration of this magical intergenerational novel makes for worthwhile listening. Luz Lopez, who has special abilities as a tea-leaf reader in 1930s Denver, finds herself going back in time to understand her Indigenous Chicano family's journey through traumatic circumstances. This story of love, loss, and survival is passionately narrated. Bobadilla's delivery is steady and quick at times, and she provides a slight accent that suggests Luz's heritage. Her tone of urgency foreshadows the hardship Luz and her family members experience. It's vitally important that listeners pay close attention to the pauses that indicate new chapters and different time periods as numerous characters shape Luz and her clairvoyant abilities.
