Anne-Marie Piazza's accomplished narration transports listeners to Victorian London to follow the adventures of accomplished cook Kat Holloway as she investigates the death of her husband, Joe. The story is complicated by the fact that her help was requested by Joe's other wife, a situation that continually reminds Kat of her bigamous marriage. Piazza's use of accents and inflection clearly distinguishes the working-class characters and those of the upper echelons of Victorian society. She also creates a believable and likable character in Daniel, Kat's friend and new romantic interest. Piazza keeps the plot moving with her well-paced narration, helping the tension build as Kat seeks to uncover the truth about what happened to her late husband.
