This latest audio installment in the Scientists in the Field series highlights the revolutionary wildlife science being conducted in a startlingly untouched ecosystem--Isle Royale, an isolated island hidden in Lake Ontario. Narrator Mikhaila Aaseng vocally italicizes the last beat of most sentences as if performing for toddlers--not the intended audience (8-to-12-year-olds). Her enlivening attempts aren't unwarranted as the author fails to paint an interesting picture of the island ecosystem. Her focus is introducing young listeners to the island's scientists and their work, including data collection. But neither hearing about the tediousness of radio telemetry technology nor listening to Isle Royale's federal job descriptions verbatim is the best way to entice kids to pursue a career in wildlife biology.
