FIRE, BED AND BONE

An old farm dog, heavy with pups, sees everything, knows everything, reports everything, in the terrifying days of unrest and rebellion as England moves inexorably toward the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The rich, whispering urgency of Eve Karpf's voice is haunting, just right for the wisdom of one of Earth's four-legged creatures who observes all human suffering, folly and courage--and reflects upon it. Rufus's voice is rough and wise, Comfort's gently sorrowful; both are subtle and effective, as are all the distinct human voices. Karpf's pacing is superb. Frequent vocal rushes lend gravity to the harshest events. From time to time, the pace slows in recollection of those few joyful incidents that make life worth living.
