Emily Woo Zeller superbly narrates this imaginative reflection on Japanese citizens and their relationship with radiation. Zeller's performance is transcendent in this tale in which radiation becomes a character. Everything is radioactive. Geiger counters are part of daily life, as is Trinity, a mysterious disease of the elderly. Trinity is also a cyber-sex website offering anonymous, uncomfortably graphic sex talk. As the 2020 Tokyo Olympics approach, the city's excitement is displaced by fear of Trinity, the illness. Chronicling the lasting effects of radiation from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well the Fukushima disaster, Zeller gives clarity to the often confusing, nonlinear plot. She draws precise portraits of the mostly unnamed characters and makes even the fragmented plot memorable listening. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2022]
