Stacey Glemboski employs her considerable vocal talent to narrate this black comedy set on contemporary Long Island. When Laurel is informed that her husband, Doug, has been in a car accident, her immediate thought is that his death would solve their financial woes and allow her to change her life. Laurel and Doug have a traditional marriage wherein Laurel feels obligated to take care of all of Doug's needs, and the strain is unsettling her. Many of the characters, including Laurel's agoraphobic mother, Joan, and Laurel's best friend, Monica, are lonely, and Glemboski poignantly reveals their longing for community. Despite Glemboski's emotive characterizations and comfortable pacing, this audiobook will be best appreciated by those who favor quirky characters and a retro sensibility.
