The subtitle of this audiobook--"Sherman, Geronimo, and the War for America"--is somewhat misleading. Geronimo appears only in the first few and last few chapters, and Sherman is largely missing for long stretches. But it does take a long view of the conflict between European Americans and Native Americans that ended with the surrender of the Apache leader in 1886. Christopher Grove delivers the text that occasionally descends into anecdotes that prove only mildly relevant and is not helped by his sometimes peculiar, and decidedly distracting, phrasing. This detailed military history begins at the end of the Civil War and tracks America's longest sustained violent conflict over the next three decades. Despite its flaws, it is well worth listening to. D.M.H. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2023]
