Soneela Nankani narrates a dual-timeline story of two women who are both seeking the truth about themselves. After her father's unexpected death, Sophie Shah travels to France to find out what happened to her mother. Nankani invests both Sophie and her mother, Nita, with dignity and authenticity, creating sympathetic characters despite numerous clichés. Sophie has lived a sheltered life, but Nankani portrays her as a curious young woman who is trying her best to be brave. Nita throws away a seemingly perfect life to chase a dream, and Nankani manages to make her increasingly incomprehensible choices form a sort of logic. Nankani's talents as a narrator add complexity to this melodramatic story. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2023]
