Acclaimed playwright Athol Fugard finds humor and heartbreak in the friendship of Harold (Hally), a 17-year-old white boy in South Africa in the 1950s, and the two middle-aged black servants, Sam and Willie, who raised him. Vital lessons of life, love, and respect are well taught by Sam as he tries to guide Hally in understanding the rage that stems from his relationship with his alcoholic father. The narration by Leon Addison Brown, Keith David, and Bobby Steggert gives this audio presentation authenticity. The crisp and lilting performance pace and vocal characterizations truly enhance the text. With each scene, the characters become more real, their predicaments more profound. While good does not conquer evil as one would hope, the journey is most enlightening and well worth taking. M.R.E. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 05]
