Imogen Church brings diverse characters to life with consummate skill, including a variety of European accents. The story is set during WWII. Lena, a survivor of polio as an infant, is adamant she will overcome her disability and achieve her dreams. Her father, Theo, a star illusionist in a traveling circus, is protective as he tries to balance his need to keep Lena safe with her independent streak. Alexandre, an orphan who finds a home with the circus, brings his own secrets and dreams. Eventually, the characters end up in a town the Nazis have designated for Jews. The author's note gives historical context to the story, and the conversation with her illuminates the process that brought the seed of this story to fruition.
