The stories of English veterinarian James Herriot translate well to audio. They are charming, short, and self-contained. Listeners can enjoy them one or more at a time with no loss of continuity. Add in the narration of Nicholas Ralph, and you have a first-rate audio experience. Ralph plays Herriot in the PBS series, but he does not simply bank on his star power. He narrates the stories with empathy and emotion. His skill with voices really sets this work apart. Ralph seems to become the various farmers, townspeople, and others in the audiobook, moving back and forth in conversations with facility. This audiobook picks up where the most recent season of the TV series leaves off, with Herriot joining the RAF. But his wartime experiences are secondary to life in the Yorkshire dales. R.C.G.
